Unit 9 Blog

Hello everyone,

Here is my Unit 9 Project.

The reason I feel that it is important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually and physically is because if the health care professional isn’t developed psychologically, spiritually and physically that means that they are not capable of teaching health and wellness to their patients and have it be effective.

The areas that I feel that I need to develop to achieve my goals that I have for myself are to become more spiritual.  The reason I feel this way is because I feel that I need to become more in tune with God so that I am living by his word completely and not just partially.

I have assessed my health in each of the domains by looking deep inside myself to see where I am lacking.  I have done this by meditating and actually just sitting by myself and thinking about my life.  On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being my wellness high and 1 being low, I feel that physically and psychologically are rated an 8.  As for me spiritually, I would rate myself as a 3.  As I stated in the paragraph above, that is why I feel that way.

My one goal that I have for myself in each area is for my physical well being, I want to exercise more than 3 times a day and I will make it 6 -7 days a week within the next 90 days.  As for psychological or my mental health well being, my goal is not to let the small things stress me out. I just need to be like a duck and let it roll off my back.  I will be doing this within the next 30 days. As far as my spiritual wellness, I will start reading the Bible more often and start living by God’s word within the next 60 days.

The strategies that I am going to implement to foster growth in each of the following domains; Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual are as follows. For my physical growth, I will be progressively working out 15 minutes a day, twice a day, morning and night.  Once I feel that I can handle that, I will increase the number of days a week that I will be exercising.  As for psychological (mental) exercises, I will continue to meditate, but I will increase it to 5 days a week and then at one point over the next 30 days.  I will also do brain teasers to keep my mind and mental status sharp as a tack.  Finally, for my spiritual growth, I will continue to expand my knowledge by reading, praying and research.

The way that I will keep track of my progress is I will keep a daily log that will tell me at the end of each week how I have been doing on working towards my goals.  Once I reach my goals that I have set for myself, I will be able to keep these going long-term.  If my daily log shows that I am not doing so hot and lacking in an area, I will force myself to work harder, but I doubt that will happen.

  1. Hi Sonia,
Thank you so much for your encouraging and warm words. It amazes me how God used everyday situations and everyday people to speak to us through. This class has really been a blessing to me and it seems like to you also.
I have decided to set myself small goals so that I can experience successes and then add to them weekly. I like the fact that you are going to use a daily log to track your progress.
I wish you the very best and I know that you will experience great growth – developmentally, spiritually, mentally and emotionally.
    Sincerely,
    Barbara Bryson

  2. I think you are well on your way to achieving your goals and I wish you the best of luck. As I am reading our classmates blogs, it makes me realize how much we all have grown and learned from this class and I think being able to utilize the knowledge is the best kind of education. good luck with your goals and your success at Kaplan!

  3. I enjoyed reading your post, I especially like the idea of doing brain teasers to increase mental stability this will also help you focus your mind on something positive. I think that setting little goals instead of goals that are hard to obtain is a great idea. I think that a lot of people lose their focus when goals are set to high in the beginning. For instance a person who does not engage in any physical activity it would be unethical to think someone could adjust to 90 minutes of exercise daily, instead starting with 15 minutes and gradually increase the amount of time to reach 90 minutes is an obtainable goal for them. I really enjoyed your post and wish you the best of luck.

  4. Hi Sonia,

Great blog post this week. I like the fact we had to give our goals and where we see ourselves in these areas. It is eye opening to learn this information. I know I am learning so much information I am going to keep using in my personal life. I like what you said about doing brain teasers that is a great idea. They say that is a good way to help fight Alzheimer. What is your favorite meditation method? Keep up the great work!

  5. Sonia, It looks like you have a great plan in place. Don't over due the workout too much, because you might get burnt out quick. Try pacing yourself so that you can see your progress and be happier with how it is work for you. I hope that you really enjoy all the things we have learned and are able to keep on reflecting back at all the great things we have learned. I wish you well and god bless.

  6. Sonia,
I like your idea that if you are not able to do than you cannot teach, however how about for example I coach track and field for Rittman High School. Now I have never run a 1600 meter faster than 4:59 however I have kids that I coach that can. So even though I cannot do I can still teach, just something to think about. Understand there is a difference between knowledge and ability. I have the ability to coach because of my knowledge but not the ability to do.
When rating my health I find that my spiritual health is much in need as well. I think this is because I never thought that my health was tied to my psychological and spiritual aspect but that eating right and working out were enough (physical) so that is what I always focused on.

  7. Sonia,

I enjoyed reading your project. It was very enlightening. I liked to see that you want to be more in tune with God. I have the same goal myself. Being more spiritual is very important especially at this time when there is so much negativity and evil that surrounds us. I hope that you meet your goals you have set forth. Good luck!
